It is heritage month in South Africa in the month of September. Tradition is one of the focuses on heritage month. There is a variety of medical practices in Africa as a whole. Since South Africa is mainly
dominated by
blacks in an overwhelming
79, 5%.
www.southafrica.info.htm . Traditional medicine is highly practiced and consumed in South Africa seeing as a lot of black people praise it for being more effective than modern medicine. Traditional medicine is often consumed by its users in its
raw form while modernised versions of the raw plants are
processed and using scientifical technologies, these plants are turned into pills. Modern medicine is much better and safer to use rather than traditional medicine, here are some of the reasons why you should consider using modern medicine instead of traditional medicine:

- The formulation of the drug is always stated in the packaging
- Regulations by the Health Department on the drug are often visible
- Testing on the drug's effectiveness is done before it is distributed
- Dosage is accurate and clear
- Medical consultation is always open
- Trained and educated professionals administer the mediciation
It is often a hard decision to choose between traditional and modern medicine but advatages of modern medicine certainly outweigh those of traditional medicine. Which ever option works for you, be sure that it is good for your mind, body and overall health.
we are africans and that can not change, that is why traditional medicine will always be used more than modern medicine and the reason for that is because of our cultural values and norms
ReplyDeleteWhether you are African or not, but would you still use traditional medicine even if you knew it would kill you?
DeleteAnother thing is that modern medicine states what you can use it for. People who use traditional medicine often use one thing for a lot of illnesses and sometimes it just doesn't work. You cannot use an African potato for flu, cancer, TB, HIV and many other things. many people have died because of false information regarding traditional medicine. I'd rather use something for what itis meant to cure, not what I think it has to cure. Modern medicine is the way to go.
ReplyDeleteI must honestly say that I totally agree with you there caged bird. African medicine has way too many risks involved when consumed.

ReplyDeleteI think Traditional medicine are not working properly on our body because are not recommended by doctors.
ReplyDeleteThey do not work because truth is they were never tested before being used and sold out to the publics, modern medicine is tried and tested before it is sold to the public.
DeleteOur government should show more willingness to intervene between the traditional and western medicines, the two can work well together.
ReplyDeleteThe two can work very well together provided that coherence between the two is established, and come to think of it, they would make medical revolution by collaborating.
DeleteIt is fine for our Africans to use traditional medicine since they are in touch with their roots and culture. My concern is when they do not follow their treatment of any chronicle disease. It is saddening because it mostly leads to the losss of that persons life.
ReplyDeleteYes the practice of African medicine dates back to centuries ago, but truth be told, it is not at all direct to a specific ailment and can be life threatening most of the time.
DeleteWell I prefer modern madicine because it is tried and tested..some of this traditional healers are fraud..I do not want to risk my life.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you and many people are fooled by these faudulent 'traditional doctors' who claim people's lives with their potent and deadly medication.
DeleteI will go with something that heals better which is modern medicine because it has helped me many times already.
ReplyDeleteNot only does modern medicine heal, but it is specific as to what it is made for and how to use it, which is not the case with traditional medicine.
DeleteAs South Africans we are a cultured country and traditional medicines have always being around, I say it is a matter of choice. As people we can go with modern medicine or go the tradiotional route.
ReplyDeleteIt should depend on its effectiveness on healing which is really the whole point of using medication.
DeleteI think that the debate between traditional vs western medicine is one that will be going on for some time. However I do also think that perhaps the reason why a large number of africans still lean towards traditional medicine is due to the unavailability of western medicine in areas which are still extreemly rural.
ReplyDeleteIt is true that modern medicine may not be immediately available to the rural areas but these days the Department of Health is trying to build clinics even in the ruralest of areas, so hopefully, modern medicine will be easily available to every South African citizen who needs it.
DeleteAny medicine could work in your body as long you believe and follow the right instructions. And people tend to believe more in modern medicine than traditional one because doctors recommend it.
ReplyDeleteModern medicine is medically more effective and safer to use than traditional medicine. Hence people tend to go for modern medicine.
DeleteThe government must consider both tradition and western medicines because people believe in different cultures.
ReplyDeletei think that traditional medicine is just the same as modern medicine only difference is that modern medicine is not in its raw form and its less frightening to take than the traditional medicine thus traditional medicine is more scrutinised
ReplyDeletemodern medicines are far much better beacuase they are checked by specialist to see any side effects.
